The Avon River Heritage Society (ARHS) and local marketing company Avondale Media are launching the area’s first Museum Access Point (or M.A.P.™ for short) for community Internet access when it opens for summer season June 15.
The ARHS Museum, together with the SeaChest Giftshop and Lydia and Sally Café, will be the first museum in West Hants to fully embrace the 21st century by providing free high-speed WI-FI (wireless) Internet for visitors, researchers and the community. New ARHS president Darryl Sheehy says that their board of directors is delighted and excited. “There isn’t a government-funded CAP (Community Access Program) site for miles and miles around this neck of the woods, and we wanted to offer this service to help boost the number of visitors we have, locals especially.” Our facility is the only museum on the Avon River and focuses on tidal information, ecology, and shipbuilding history in addition to specializing in Planter history and genealogy.
Avondale Media’s owners Greg and Heather Desveaux says it’s human nature for people overlook what is right in their backyard. Says Greg, “We want to put the museum on people’s maps, to share what we have here and help boost our local rural economy in the present and for the future."
Avondale Media is donating computer equipment to support two public-access terminals and assisted in the recruitment of an employee to help manage the site and assist with putting some of the museum’s collections online over the duration of its summer operation.
Access is available to museum visitors during normal operation hours, Tuesday - Sunday 10 am - 5 pm. Children under 16 must be supervised by an adult or a museum director. For more info, call 757-1718 or
